Advantages of a Francophone Preschool

Preschool, along with parent involvement, ensures that children can discover the world in their language, the French language. The child might make Francophone friends for the first time and learn that his or her family is not the only family that speaks French. Children can be proud of their language, their culture, and their sense of belonging to the Francophone community.

A Francophone pre-school is fundamental to the development of children living in a linguistic minority environment because it:

  • Allows children to play, sing, speak, and ask questions in their language during the most important years of linguistic and cultural development;
  • Offers the ideal opportunity for eligible children who speak little or no French to acquire basic language skills and to develop a cultural identity at an important age;
  • Create a warm and welcoming environment in which children can be proud of their language and culture;

The preschool age is the most important stage in linguistic development. Children play with and manipulate words to discover the structure and power of language. Once children can do this in their language, their self-esteem is increased and they acquire a greater sense of pride in their community.
